The other day I was trying to explain what my current read was about and I said, well, it’s a vampire/ fae / gangster/ dark romance kind of thing. I really don’t know how else to classify this series, there’s guns and magic and political and swords and generational trauma. A real pot-pourri of themes.
It really makes no differece. This is a Kathryn Ann Kingsley novel and she always delivers. This series is a bit of a departure from her usual stories which tend to be a modern FMC that finds themselves pulled into a new reality or a separate dimension. In this world the FMC is of the world and there doesn’t seem to be any crossover between universes. At least there is no crossover as of yet, but with KAK it could happen.
As usual, Kingsley deliver’s a strong, smart capable FMC and a dark MMC, more of a villain than a good guy. What I appreciate most about her characters is that the characters always meet somewhere in the middle, where the FMC is required to look at themselves as less than perfect creatures, rather than fixing the MMC, or revealing them to be a good guy that just looks black.
This is final book in the series so all the relationship building has been done and this is just the final ride of our protagonists where they will make their last stand and live their happy ever after, whatever that might look like, There is no third act breakup here, thank GOD, we get to adventure with our protagonists right to the end, and see who gets to live and who will die. I would have liked more spicy scenes, not that it’s missing, but because I like how the author writes them.
Overall, I enjoyed this series. I usually hate vampire stories, but if its a Kathryn Ann Kingsley novel, I will read it. Perhaps by now I would be looking for something new, but no, just give me more morally grey characters and a interesting world to set them in and I still haven’t had enough!
